The following activities are available for our students:

Mrs. Jessie Belote, Writing Coach

The Creative Writing Team meets after school periodically to prepare for team writing competitions where writers compete against other schools in different narrative genres with timed rounds. Students go through an open tryout process each October to form the team. A regional tournament is held during the winter.

FFA is an amazing leadership opportunity for students to learn leadership skills in Agriculture. We offer contests, activities, and other leadership experiences. Many students have come out of FFA and it has helped them in the future with jobs and college applications. Students can start in 7th grade and continue throughout high school. National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) strives to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to provide service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage good citizenship.The Duncan Lake Chapter of NJHS plays an active role in our school. Our NJHS plans and organizes service opportunities and social events throughout the school year. While planning the different activities and events, members develop leadership and project management skills.

Criteria for membership includes:

∗7th grader
∗Maintaining a cumulative 3.5 GPA or above
∗Two DLMS staff references
∗Recorded six service hours as a 7th grader with one hour of volunteer service being for the school in order to be eligible as a new member in 8th grade. Service hours must be recorded on the 'Service Hours Record Sheet' and signed by a guardian.

Students who are interested will need to complete the NJHS 'Student Credential Form' and turn in the 'Service Hours Record Sheet' to the Student Services Office by December 16, 2022. The induction ceremony for new NJHS members will be held in late January or early February. For more information regarding NJHS, please go to www.njhs.us.

The Science Olympiad competition is a WHOLE day event on March 18, 2023, at Grand Valley State University. Practices will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 3:30 pm starting February 28. Sign ups are open now until March 2.

To create a passion for learning science by supporting elementary and secondary Science Olympiad tournaments at building, district, county, state and national levels with an emphasis on teamwork and a commitment to excellence.

To improve the quality of K-12 science education throughout the nation by changing the way science is perceived and the way it is taught (with an emphasis on problem-solving and hands-on, minds-on constructivist learning practices). This goal is accomplished through in-depth core curriculum training workshops and the distribution of curriculum materials.

To celebrate and recognize the outstanding achievement of both students and teachers in the areas of science and technology by awarding thousand of certificates, medals, trophies, and scholarships.

To promote partnerships among community, businesses, industry, government, and education.

The annual school Scripps Spelling Bee will be held on Wednesday, January 11 at 12:00 pm. Students wishing to participate must first be entered by winning their classroom bees which will take place before the holiday break. Please email your child's teacher if you would like to know the exact day. The winner and runner-up will move onto the Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held in February.

Student Council is a student-led class where representatives meet to plan and implement spirit activities and to discuss matters and make proposals relevant to student affairs throughout the school year.
