Information Regarding Changes to Elementary School Zones

During the 2020-2021 academic year, the district will begin the transition from its current school placement and transportation model for elementary students to a system based on geographic boundaries for each elementary school. Each home address in the district will be assigned to an attendance zone with a designated elementary building serving those residences.

  • There will be no change to Caledonia’s transportation system in the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Students enrolled on or before January 1, 2020, may to choose to remain at their current elementary school or apply for an in-district transfer to their boundary zone school.
  • In preparation for the transition, all new residents and incoming Kindergarten students will be placed at the school in their respective 2021-2022 geographic boundary or attendance zone (see maps below).
  • Beginning in the 2021-2022 school year, parents who opt to keep their children in a school building outside of their attendance zone will be responsible for transportation to either an approved bus stop or to the school.
  • Parents who are seeking to transfer to their boundary zone school or a transfer for any other reason may request an internal transfer. Please see the "In-district Student Transfer" section on the main Enrollment page.

Elementary School Zones

All new in-district elementary students will be placed according to the geographical location of their home address.  The map below displays the zones for each elementary school building. Click the map for a larger view with more details.

In-district Elementary School Zone FAQs:

(Scroll down for School of Choice FAQs.)
1.  My child attends a daycare that is zoned for the school they attend, will busing be provided to that zoned school from the daycare?
Answer: Yes, Example - If your child attends a daycare in the Kettle Lake boundary and they attend Kettle Lake Elementary, this will be recognized for bussing; however, they would not be eligible for bussing to a school that they attend outside of the Kettle Lake boundary.

2.  My child currently attends Young Fives, will he/she be given priority when being placed in a building for kindergarten since they are already a CCS student?
Answer: Yes, all currently enrolled Young Fives students and new enrollees will be automatically placed in the school for which they are zoned. If you would like to attend a school outside of your school boundary, you will have to apply through the In-District Student Transfer process.

3.  I have a current Young Fives student I want placed with my other children, at an elementary school I am not zoned for. I plan on providing transportation.  What is the process for that?
Answer: You will need to apply for a transfer for only your Young Fives student using the In-District Student Transfer process which begins on February 1, 2021. In this transfer process, your child will be given Priority 1 status for open seats so that siblings can be united in the same school.

4.  My students attend a school outside of our ‘zone’.  I want to keep them there and I will provide transportation. What do I do?
Answer: Nothing, your student(s) can stay at their school but transportation to the school or an approved bus stop would become the responsibility of the family starting in August 2021.

5. What school is my child’s daycare zoned for?
A list of a few common childcare locations is below:

  • Milestones Childcare Center is zoned for Kettle Lake Elementary
  • Gilden Woods Early Care and Preschool is zoned for Emmons Lake Elementary
  • Adventures Learning Center is zoned for Emmons Lake Elementary

For more information on local licensed childcare facilities go to:
https://childcaresearch.apps.lara.state.mi.us/

6. My child has special transportation and attends a special program, do I need to change schools based on the new school boundaries?
Answer: No, if your child attends a specialized program and/or receives specialized transportation based on their IEP, your child will continue to receive programs and services as determined annually by the IEP team.

School of Choice Elementary Zone FAQs:

1.  I am a nonresident family, and want to transfer to a school that my daycare is zoned for, can I do that?
Answer: Yes you can.  You will want to follow the In-District Transfer Process.
What priority will I be given?
Answer: CCS recognizes three priorities:
Priority 1: Siblings who are attending separate buildings and wish to be reunited.
Priority 2: Families who are attending a school outside of their home boundary and
are seeking a transfer into their home boundary school zone.
Priority 3: Families seeking an internal transfer for any other reason.

2.  I am a current nonresident family and I want to keep my students in their current elementary. Can I bring them to an approved bus stop in that elementary’s zone to get busing?
Answer: Yes, if your child is already attending a school in our district and you would like to remain at that school, you are welcome to stay. You will be responsible for taking your child directly to and from the school or an approved bus stop starting in August 2021.  Arrangements will need to be made through our transportation office.

3.  I am a parent of a nonresident student. If my child’s daycare is in his/her elementary school’s zone will he/she get busing from the daycare to the elementary?
Answer: If the child’s daycare is an approved bus stop within that school boundary the child can utilize the transportation system.  Under our current system, transportation from an approved bus stop will be provided. Arrangements will need to be made through our transportation office.
Is there a chance that transportation could be taken away from non-residents?
Answer: Transportation will be provided for all CCS students based on school boundaries and available bussing. In the event that a particular bus route is full, you will need to work with the transportation department to identify a bus stop that has capacity for your child. CCS will make all reasonable efforts to transport any enrolled student who qualifies for transportation and desire to use our bus system.
