Kindergarten & Young Fives at CCS

Both Kindergarten and Young Fives are full-day programs taught by CCS staff, aligned to Michigan’s kindergarten standards and follow the CCS district calendar.

Young Fives serves as the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience and is designed for students who would benefit from additional time to develop foundational academic, social, and emotional skills.

Who Is Eligible for Young Fives?

Students are eligible for Young Fives if they:

  • Turn 5 years old between July 1 and December 1 of the school year, and
  • Would benefit from an additional year focused on foundational skill development

Young Fives enrollment is optional and free to age-eligible students who reside in Caledonia Community Schools or enroll through School of Choice, based on space availability.

Young Fives vs. Preschool

  • Young Fives follows Michigan kindergarten standards
  • Instruction is provided by certified CCS elementary teachers
  • Curriculum builds upon preschool learning to prepare students for kindergarten

Young Fives vs. Kindergarten

  • Same core standards, taught at a slower, developmentally appropriate pace
  • Increased opportunities for play and social development
  • Designed to support long-term academic success
